No law to justify towing of mopeds by University

I drive my moped to campus everyday, not just from one place on campus to another.

I sold my car because it was too expensive to maintain. I park in designated scooter parking spaces, and I have no permit.

Do you know why? Because there is no law that says I need one. Under State law, which I thought the University was supposed to be following, mopeds do not fall in the same categories as motorcycles and cars.

They cannot be charges for parking because they are, by law, bicycles.

The University towing mopeds would be them making their own laws, and unless something has changined in the last 200 or so years, they can’t do that.

I would like to see the tow my scooter and deal with me in small claims court.

Removing scooter parking solves no safety problems

When a problem in life arises, the wisest look for solutions others have used successfully. UGA Parking Services does no such thing.

In Mondays article in the Red and Black about “Safe Scooter Practices,” parking services is quoted saying that they “want to move these corrals off the sidewalks and move them to surface lots.” This sounds great but what does that really mean? It means that they are going to reduce the number of scooter parking areas from the current 13 to only 6 scooter parking areas that are much less central.

This does solve their problem, but by simply making the scooters disappear. The solution lies in the policy of many of our rival schools such as University of Florida, Clemson, Auburn, and Georgia Tech.

If one simply looks at the parking maps on their websites and their scooter parking policies, it is quickly discovered that there is a scooter parking space by most buildings, and that scooters and motorcycles park in the same spaces. Even furthermore, at all of the schools listed except for Florida, 50cc scooters do not have to pay to park.

Who would have ever imagined that by increasing access to parking, that the current scooter problem as described by parking services would be alleviated? Well, I guess the answer here is “not parking services.”

Where's the scooter hatred come from?

Why are scooter riders being treated as second class motorist on the University of Georgia campus? Who is the "Scooter Task Force" and why was this force commissioned? Have the haters ever ridden a scooter on a public street? Is Parking Services really looking for more green space? Do they really care about the environment or a pleasant student experience on campus?

The most recent plans of the "Scooter Task Force" are:

* push scooter parking to the edge of campus
* assign scooters to a single lot
* continue the segregation of motorcycles and scooters
* retain the status quo for motorcycles

Unless something is done, they'll probably have this in place by Fall. Get involved. Join the Scooter Owners Rights Evangelists Facebook Group. Or, send UGA Parking Services a message!
